The core part of Shadow Warrior 3: Definitive Edition is the new arena mode, which I mentioned previously. There were a few times when I noticed that things in this edition of the game would pop in funny or wouldn’t quite line up with an animation which shouldn’t happen on a definitive edition of a game. Looking at the videos of the game prior to this re-release and reading the review Alexx did on the PlayStation 4 version of the game, there doesn’t appear to be too much of a difference from what I can tell. As you can imagine, that is not a lot of time for there to be a major increase in the visual quality of graphics. This should not come as a surprise considering that it has been less than a year since the original game came out. Sadly, there are no upgrades for graphics when it comes to PC. The first things to discuss are the graphics and performance. However, this new version has replaced the old version and the developers have allowed owners of the original game to get this definitive edition for free.

While bringing the game onto the next generation of consoles is a good reason for this edition, the new updates don’t give much of a reason for anyone on PC to pick up this new version over the original release.

The first is that the game is finally being released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, and the second reason is that there is a new arena mode for the game and new skins that you can unlock. The reasoning for this definitive edition is two-fold. There is definitely a lot to enjoy here, but just remember that you will have to sit through some repetitive gameplay and a lot of forced and stale humour.Definitive editions of games are often done around major milestones or anticipated changes that come to the game. Shadow Warrior 3’s gameplay is fun, and the combat is fantastic, but it’s rinse and repeat formula really does make the game become quite tedious. Whilst he does sound quite different, I am a big fan of this new vocal direction. On the other hand SungWon Cho is now the voice behind the menacing Orochi Zilla. Moh does sound a little more stale in his delivery of the many snarky one-liners that have become expected of the character. Interestingly, both the parts of Lo Wang & Orochi Zilla have been recast for this latest installment. Lo Wang is now voiced by Mike Moh, and unfortunately his performance isn’t entirely convincing! Orochi Zilla is now voiced by SungWon Cho, and he is absolutely fantastic! To get back onto the positives, another great aspect of Shadow Warrior 3 is the visual design! The world looks fantastic and the graphics are a massive improvement over the previous entries! This is expected given that the second game came out 6 years ago! But the world is truly stunning and the creativity of the art design really makes this game a pleasure to look at. Because even the enemies become repetitive, as you will always find them in the same areas in arenas, following similar patterns with no real variety.

After a while this did cause me to start feeling a little disinterested. As it is also very easy to tell when you are about to enter into one, the game starts to feel repetitive quite quickly! Instead of feeling like you are out on some big adventure, you simply traverse the linear levels until you encounter an arena, then you must “Clear the area of enemies to continue”! Then you are traversing till you are halted by yet another battle arena, and then you rinse and repeat.Īside from a few key set pieces, most of the traversal simply becomes a filler between the battle arenas! These arenas eventually become tedious. However, it is not very common to be involved in much combat when outside of a Combat Arena. I know this seems like a strange criticism at first. The level design is broken into just two components, Combat Arenas and Traversal. Unfortunately this leads me to another big let down in Shadow Warrior 3. These new abilities are vital in helping you survive the many battle arenas that you will encounter! Lo Wang can now run along walls, slide through enemies and also has a grappling hook, which can constantly be used to get out of sticky situations. There have been some minor additions to traversal which have really helped set the scene for many of the high intensity action set-pieces. Some of the executions are truly brutal! But they do give you some awesome weapons to fight back the enemy!
